What's In a Name?

It's Aloha Friday! Hope you have a good weekend!! And now for some written thoughts before the week closes: Ok. My sister's input has spurred me to consider a name change for the school. See it on the blog's title page. I tweeked it a little. Her recommendation is for NOT using the term ACADEMY. She wrote: "I personally feel that "Academy" is way too rigid and has negative connotations, structured through non-Pacific philosophies of knowledge that are actually inhibiting our (pacific) children's learning. I suggest "Iosepa Center for Cultural Learning and Education". I added the 21st century part. So what is a 21st century education? That'll be the topic of another post. For now, consider this comment and change, and give your feedback! Mahalo!!!

What is Social and Emotional Learning? Do we need it at Iospea Academy?

The goal of Iosepa Academy is to provide an educational experience which includes powerful solutions for specific challenges of our target population. Tragically, the Pacific Islander community has seen the loss of too many youth to drugs, gang involvement, crime, and other problems that derail the personal and community success possible in our country.

A commitment to include Social and Emotional Learning as an integral part of our curriculum will strengthen our students with the personal and interpersonal skills they will need to be successful in their roles as life-long learners, professionals in a diverse work world, and leaders in communities and families of the future. Watch this short video to better understand the reasons and benefits of including instruction in the areas of social and emotional wellbeing. This is an interview with Dr. Daniel Goleman, an authority on Emotional Intelligence and a pioneer in the area of putting this theory into practice. Please comment on plans for this area of instruction.

Project Learning

What is "Project Learning"? Project learning (sometimes also referred to as "problem learning" or "service learning") is an instructional method we've chosen as part of our educational philosophy because of it's real-world applications for students, it's ability to accomodate many different learning styles, and because... well, it's just a funner way to learn!
